Nail art. It's creative and sometimes crazy. It is ingenious and sometimes wacky. It is interesting, sometimes festive but always arty. Nail art is something that a lot of people do, with nail salons featuring manicures and pedicures booming and seemingly on every corner. Some people opt to get their nails done by a professional, others go it alone and it's part of the fun of many a slumber party. But where did it originate?

Painting our nails come from Ancient Egyptians where women would dye their nails with henna to indicate their social status. If you were in the lower classes, your nails would be pastel or neutral colors, leaving the bold jewel tones, the deep, bold shades to those in the upper classes.

Around the same time, in Babylonia it was the men who were dedicated to nail painting and nail art. They would either sport green or black nails, black for the noblemen and green for the common man and they would paint the nails as they prepared for war. They would also curl their hair and partake in additional beautification processes all before heading out to fight.

At around 3000 BC, in China, nail polish was first made. It was formulated from beeswax, gelatin, egg whites, vegetable dyes and gum arabic. The people would dip their nails into the mixture and let it sit for a few hours before being allowed to dry. The colors ranged from pink to red depending on the specific ingredients and how long you had left your nails to soak in the mixture.

That's all about painting nails one color, but in the Inca Empire they actually painted eagles on their nails and by 1770 the first manicure sets were created and widely available for purchase. By the 1800's people were getting 'modern' manicures or what we would think of as modern anyway, and in 1907 the first modern nail polish was developed. At first it was just clear, but through the years they added colors and well, we know how many different colors and features nail polish of today has.

Today we have shiny polish, matte polish and polish with glitter added. We can have velvet manicures, we can have pictures painted on our nails and we are not limited to one color for all 10 fingers or toes, as the fashion dictates at least one fingernail be a different color. We all know that drinking water is good for us. It is drummed into us seemingly at every turn, and while it's been proven time and time again, water is just, well, boring. While drinking water after a long run or having been out in the hot sun is very refreshing, sometimes we just want to kick it up a notch of two and that's where spa water comes in.

No, it's not a new brand, just an idea that has been around for as long as there have been spas. Back in the day, people would flock to the Alps to breathe in the fresh air and get back to nature. They'd also be given cucumber in water as the ultimate in a healthy drink. Spa water was born (as was bottle water, but that's an article for another day!)

Today we put all sorts of things into our water to give it a kick of flavor, because we all know we drink more than it when it tastes good, right? Surprisingly, cucumber water is very tasty, it is fresh and clean tasting and really brings out the cucumber-y taste. While it may seem weird to put a vegetable into water, it's really not, despite fruits of course get more of a look in.

Strawberries, apples and cinnamon, oranges, lemons, limes and even pear can be put into water in any mix you'd like which not only livens up the water but gives you the goodness (vitamins, minerals and general good stuff) of the fruits all at the same time.

Any sort of berry also works well in water, simply prick berries with a toothpick or fork to get the juices flowing and you have yourself a fun drink.

Now you may be thinking that you need some fancy container to run around town with and of course there are many on the market, but in reality all you need is a water bottle with a top large enough to put what you want inside. Does not have to be fancy, just has to work, right?

The best thing about spa water though is the fact that you can customize it to your tastes, put what you want in whatever combination you want into that water and you're good to go. The health benefits are two fold since we already know that all of the elements are good for us!

Lavender – Soothes and calms an overstimulated nervous system and balance everyday stress and tension.

Ylang Ylang + Cinnamon
