Sunless Tanning With Tea

Everyone wants a great tan and there are endless ways to achieve it. People sunbathe, visit tanning booths, take pills and apply creams, but what works? According to advertisements, all tanning products are safe and effective, but after reading consumer reviews, you'll begin to doubt those claims. Overtime, unsatisfied and tan hungry consumers have turned to their kitchens for homemade tanning products, and some of them even work!

Many people have pale complexions and desire a nice, even, natural looking tan. They've tried everything on the market and after spending thousands they've only been disappointed. My quest for the perfect, inexpensive tan lead me to the kitchen. I had read some information on tanning with tea. Although this idea sounds crazy, it's not quite as crazy as spending hundreds of dollars on a tanning membership so I save it a try. Here I've outlined how to tan using tea and the results I've had with this method.

First you'll want to gather the materials needed for tea tanning. I used four large tea bags, two and a half cups of water and a masonry sponge. I used a masonry sponge because it can absorb a lot of liquid and is smooth, soft and pliable. Next you should thoroughly clean and exfoliate your skin. Exfoliating will remove any rough patches of skin that could cause uneven results. Exfoliating will also remove some layers of old skin that ensures your tea-tan will last as long as possible. If you are tanning your legs, make sure to shave them before tanning. If you shave after tanning you'll remove the skin that you have worked to tan. Once completely clean and dry, you can start your tea.

Prepare the tea as you would if you were going to consume it. Be sure to let the tea steep for at least five minutes and then cool enough to be able to touch it. The tanning process is pretty messy, so find an area you can clean after (no carpet!) Or do not mind messing up. Grab your masonry sponge (or gauze) and soak it in the tea. Once you have a generous amount of tea on the application device rub it across your skin. You can dab or rub the tea all over your skin in any direction you please. Actually using both rubbing and dabbing methods may provide you with more coverage. Tea-tanning rarely streaks which makes it a great option for at-home tanners. After applying a generous amount of tea to your skin, let it dry for at least ten minutes. If the tea-tan is not dark enough for your liking, you can repeat the process as many times as you like making sure to allow time for drying in between. To get a noticeably different skin tone you may have to apply the tea around 8-10 times. The longer you allow the tea set the defect the color will become. Try to wait at least 4 hours before showering and do not exfoliate.

Tea tanning does not last as long as long as spray tanning however, it does work! You're tan will probably be near gone after two day, but if you are looking for a natural sunless tan this is a great method.

Double Dipping – What You Need To Know Before You Get A Bikini Wax

On January 15th I decided to return to school and get my esthetics license. I am loving every minute of it! I especially enjoy performing waxing services (bikini, Brazilians excluded)! Part of my education (and a rude awakening) is of course sanitation, health codes, and safety precautions. I have never thought about it prior, but it turns out double dipping appears to be a problem that runs amok in many salons and spas (and right in front of my eyes at my FORMER nail salon). Also, the general public does not have a clue on what is safe and what is a glaring health code violation.

Well, I've got good news and bad news. The good news is I am going to give you the 411 on what is right (and hygienic). The bad news is many of you have probably already been the victim of the “Double Dip” and not even known it was putting you at risk for a plethora of nasty little diseases.

First off, double dipping is a health code violation in pretty much every state in America! Now let me make this clear, it is a health code violation and just because something is a health code violation does not make it illegal as many truly uninformed morons have been throwing about. It is not a crime the police are not coming to take you away, but if the technician will be fined and if sentenced repeatedly the technician faces larger fines and the loss of their license nothing more.

Here's the problem, did you even know it was wrong? When you are getting your eyebrows waxed are your eyes even opened to see the offending double dipper? Probably not.

Let me explain why double dipping is actually bad. When the technician uses the same pot of wax for more than one customer and puts the same spatula back in to the same pot over and over they are contaminated the wax and potentially spreading disease! I mean do you really want the same wax that was used for a Brazilian used on your upper lip ?? I'm going to go with a NO!

There are different authorities with different opinions about this. Some say the wax is hot enough to kill bacteria, or bacteria can not grow in a pot of wax. This simply is not true. In order to kill bacteria the wax would have to be set to a temperature of 140 degrees F, and then kept at 130 degrees F to keep it bacteria free. Wax pots are never more than a few degrees above body temperature and if they were kept any hotter it would burn the skin. The other theory is that bacteria can not grow in a wax pot because moisture is not present. I am not as sure about this as I could find a definite answer, but let me ask you this: do you really want someone else's pubic hair stuck in the wax on your upper lip ??!

there is one exception to the double dip and that is if the wax is brand new and only being used on a single person and then thrown away you are not at risk of spreading disease, but let's face it no one is going to spend the money to change out a pot of wax for every client and it is still not a good idea period!

So, now you know it is wrong (and really gross). What do you do with this information and how do you ensure you will not be the victim of this nasty practice?

Simple, ask questions people !! When you go to a spa to get waxing done take a GOOD look around !! Is it clean? Is the staff neatly dressed and well groomed? Ask to use the restroom (the condition of the restroom will tell you a whole lot). Ask them up front if they double dip. If they say no make sure they have plenty of disposable spatulas on hand for your service. Look at the wax pot! Is it clean and free of any debris?

Cheaper is not always better (it is not always bad either). However, you should be more concerned about safety and less concerned about cost. The extra money you spend getting the service may save you thousands in medical bills in the future.

You are your own best advocate, do not be afraid to ask the questions and do not let anyone tell you that double dipping is “OK” it is not, period !!

The failure to follow good personal hygiene practices will lead to a variety of personal, social and medical conditions that greatly impact upon a person's sense of general well-being. They also have the potential to cause problems for the general population if allowed to get out hand. A wise person once wrote the aphorism “cleanliness is next to godliness.” By remembering this it serves as a reminder of our need to practice good personal hygiene.

Hot Tubs – Do They Really Cause Problems?

The hot tub is one of those units that can raise all sorts of arguments when it comes to safety and many people are put off by the discussions that have occurred. Some of these discussions are accurate and some are mythical and it is important to get the right balance. There is no point in getting it wrong, the general view is that used correctly and in the right condition the hot tub can bring many benefits to the user and provide a good environment. A poor usage can potentially harm the user and these need checking before usage.

They allow people to soak in water at high temperatures and at a temperature above 110 degrees F there have been a number of reported fatalities either by causing drowsiness followed by drowning, or heart, or stroke problems. The sensible thing is to reduce the temperature to below 104 degrees F and to be sensible about the time that is spent in the water. There is a strong recommendation from most sources to keep the time in the tub to a small amount say 20 minutes depending on the temperature, basically the higher the temperature the shorter the time. If a long time is spent in the water the blood temperature will rise specifically if the water temperature is set very high and the blood temperature can go above the 98.6 degrees F then it is possible to experience hypothermia. The simple rule is to be sensible and if the user has any doubts on his medical problems be they high or low blood pressure or circulation or other problems then they should consult their medical practiceer and get a proper recommendation.

The water, when warm, by definition contains a lot of bacteria and generally these are not harmful but they require to be controlled and this is done by various cleaning systems and it is essential to keep those under control. This must be done regularly and the water should be changed from time to time.

The other big problem is that heavy drinking and hot tubs do not go together and should be avoided at all costs.

There are however many benefits to having a good hot tub, it improves the circulation by dilating the blood vessels. It removes toxins as the high temperature causes the body to perspire and the sweat removes the toxins. The high water temperature and pressure from the water jets helps to grow the white cells and antibodies. Generally the benefits of the hot tub far outweigh the problems.

Protecting Your Spa and Salon Clients and Staff During the Cold and Flu Season

Being a mother of four I have always been a bit concerned about germs and keeping my kids healthy, especially during cold and flu season. As I am sure we all are.

Do not get me wrong, I was not a fanatic or anything … heck a bit of dirt never killed anyone, right? Well, that I know of, and waaaaay back when in 'the good old days' we just did not have all of the anti-bacterial products or even the concerns or attention on it that we have today.

Because we are so much more aware today than years ago, it is important to do our best or protect ourselves from any harmful bacteria or virus that can, not only steal time away from us, but actually jeopardize our lives hoods and rack up so pretty hefty medical bills to boot! However, no matter how hard we try at home or when we out and about, there is just no way to always protect ourselves.

I will confess … I did become a fanatic of sorts from May 2010 through September 2011 when I was taking care of my daughter, Kathryn, 24/7 while going through cancer treatments. With the immune system so low all of the time, it is very important not to come in contact with any virus or bacteria … So I admit it, I carried the disinfectant wipes, disinfectant spray and the anti-bacterial hand gel everywhere! Everything had to be wiped down before she came in contact with it to less the chance of contacting “a bug,” which would have been very detrimental.

This is what prompted me to sit down and write this. Kathryn's twin sister, Michelle, recently had to go into the Emergency Room for dizziness and headache. While there she went into the back area to have the lab work done and when she was instructed to go back and sit in the waiting room for the results.

When she and her father first arrived there were two people in the waiting area, one broke a finger and the other had chest pains. In the back, however, every room was filled and the nurse said that she was the only one in the past four hours that was not here because of the flu. By the time she came back out after the lab she counted about 10 people laying all over the place, coughing, sneezing, fever, vomiting with more coming in the door! She sat far enough away from them and called me.

I told her to see if she could just get the hospital to call her with results since you did not have the flu and did not want to stick around to get it, if at all possible. She said they were calling people into the back and more would just sit down where that person got up … no one was given a mask, and no one was disinfecting anything! This means that when Michelle and her father sat in the waiting room when they first got there, all of the people in the back had been sitting on the same sofas and chairs! They had to sit somewhere, but we will never know if anything was disinfected or sanitized between patients … in the waiting room or in the lab room chairs and tables. Or do we?

Well, two days later … Bing, Bang, BOOM! Full blown flu, for both of them!

This got me thinking … how are you protecting your clients, staff and yourself from catching this “flu bug” that seems to be taking over America? Some areas are worse than others, but we all need to think about this. Billions of dollars and productivity are being spent and lost from lost wages and employee absenteeism for sick days.

Of course, it is important to always keep your spa or salon clean. It is important to take steps in your spa or salon to continue to do business during flu and cold season by keeping your clients and staff healthy. By showing your clients that your spa or salon business has their best interest and health at heart, you will most definitely score major loyalty points! As well as going above and beyond when other businesses are not.

Here are a few Safety Preclusions during the cold and flu season for your Spa and Salon:

1. If filling out a Client Questionnaire, be sure to either wipe off pens or this would be a great time to pass out new pens with your Spa or Salon Business information to all new clients or anyone that need to fill out any forms.

2. Be sure to have Front Desk Staff disinfect front counter, phone, charge card machine, key board or any service they come in contact with.

3. If you're waiting area has furniture that can be wiped down periodically, do so.

4. In between clients, make sure to wipe down salon chairs, especially the arm rests top and underside. As well as arm rests on shampoo bowl chairs.

5. If you have magazines in the waiting area, print out a large sticker on the front that reminds people to be sure to wash their hands. In fact, this is where you can simply say, “Because we make your health and safety our priority, we recommend to wash your hands after enjoying reading this magazine either while waiting for your appointment or relaxing during your scheduled treatment.”

6. Always use gloves to put dirty towels into washing machine and always wipe machine off so no clean towels or sheets will come in contact where the dirty laundry may have touched.

7. Do not allow dirty laundry to sit over night.

8. Keep disposable masks on hand for any employee or client that feels they need to use one.

9. Spray down services with disinfectant spray every night prior to closing.

10. Eat right, get enough sleep, and stay hydrated.
