In order to do your own pedicure, you should first soak your feet in a foot soak solution for at least 5-10 minutes. Soaking will allow the skin to soften which will make the following steps easier to accomplish.
Next you will remove dead skin cells by using a pumice pad, pumice stone or pumice file and either a foot scrub or a homemade sugar scrub. Again, Bath & Body Works has several foot scrubs to choose from but you can also make your own natural foot scrub which is called a sugar scrub. Take a small bowl and combine c cup of brown sugar, c cup of honey with 3-4 drops of your favorite essential oil. Again it can be tea tree oil, lavender oil, vanilla extract or peppermint extract. Mix all the ingredients well and then take a generous amount and rub over each foot, making sure to rub the scrub on top of the foot as well as the bottom of the foot. Scrub the foot with the pumice pad on the heel, the sides of the heel, and then up to the top of the sole of the foot. Make sure to get the sides of the feet and under the toes. You will want to go back over all areas a second time to make sure that all the dead skin is removed. Next take the scrub (without the pumice pad) and gently rub over the top of the foot to exfoliate the skin there as well. Rinse the scrub off well and dry the feet with a clean, dry towel.
Next is the massage. You can use a foot cream, an exfoliating lotion, moisturizing lotion or whatever you like. Then you can rinse off any residual cream or lotion and dry off the feet.
Next you will buff the toenails. Depending on how course the nails are, you will either use a higher grain file for coarser nails and a lower grain for less coarse. File the toenail surface by filing in a circular motion. Then glide the nail file over the edge of the toes to make sure there are no ridges.
Remove the foot from the foot soak and dry thoroughly. It's best to use a nail polish remover on the toes to remove any leftover moisture. Take a base coat and apply to the nails using a 3 stroke per nail process. After the base coat, you can use the color. Start with one stroke in the middle, one on the left side and one on the right side of the toenail. This technique provides a smooth and uniform look. You will add a total of 2 coats of the color and then you will finish with a top coat. Try not to wear shoes for at least an hour.
