Spa – The Treatments You Will Benefit From

When it comes to a day at the spa, think more than massages and pedicures. Today's spas offer far more and they can often help you to feel even better than you did before. For many people, there are outstanding services available at these facilities that could help you to correct any problem areas you may have. It goes without saying that you will need to choose those procedures right for your needs, but just knowing what your options are can help.

What Will You Have Done?

Think of today's spa as a location to go to when you want to improve the way your body looks or feels. Today's treatments are both wonderful items, such as taking care of eyebrows and much more invasive, such as getting rid of wrinkles for good. However, most facilities have one goal and that is to provide a way to treat problems and to help nourish the body's needs in a helpful way. It can be life changing, too.

Which one of the treatment options will you have when you visit the spa? Start with a skin analysis. This initial inspection, so to speak, of the skin will tell you what you can expect and what is happening with your skin. You can learn about the types of treatments that can benefit your skin right now. A consultation like this should be the first step in improving your health since it tells you what is wrong and what you can do to fix it.

You may want to simply choose one of the treatment options available. For example, you may have troublesome acne or scarring from it. If so, consider a laser treatment that can restore the healthy look to your face. You may have dull looking skin. Microdermabrasion is a great way to fix this problem without any type of invasive procedure. In other cases, you may benefit from one of the many peels available.

Keep in mind that some of the finest locations still give you the treatments you expect a spa to offer, they just do so in a better way. For example, you can still get a massage but today's massage is meant for therapy. You can choose a deep tissue massage, for example, to improve the body's overall pain level. Pre-natal and post-partum massages are also popular choices in today's more modern spas.

A spa is a place to go to improve the way you feel and look. Choose a location where the doctors are providing you with more specialized treatments and consultations to ensure you are getting the finest overall result possible. It can be an outstanding experience to step into a location like this and to walk out feeling fabulous.

The Therapeutic Benefits of the Sauna and the Steam Room

The use of hydrotherapy through spa baths and steam rooms has been in use in some form or another for over 2,000 years.

It is apparent that the sauna is one of the oldest forms of enjoyment still in use today. It is estimated that the first saunas were created somewhere between the fifth and eighth century. The terminology actually stems from the “Finish” word from smoke known as “savu” and funnily enough is the only Finnish word that is found within the English dictionary.

The steam bath is another ancient practice that we still enjoy today. Dating back to the Greek and Roman periods this form of therapy was utilized by all society as a means of socializing and helping people live a healthy lifestyle. In Turkey the ritual of “steaming” is still very alive today and is known as “hammam.”

One of the more reputable pioneers in the field of integrative medicine, Dr Andrew Weil has credited saunas with the ability of actually increasing the overall circulation within the skin. “Go Ask Alice”, a service of Columbia University's Health Services, also includes steam rooms in this benefit.

There are a couple of main differences between the steam room and the sauna. Basically the sauna offers dry heat, whereas the steam room utilizes a moist and wet heat. Temperature also differs greatly between the two. The sauna will normally operate between 160 and 200 degrees Fahrenheit alongside a humidity range of between 5% and 30%. Steam rooms on the other hand operate at 100% humidity but with temperatures between 110 and 114 degrees.

The body has unique effects when introduced to these extreme temperatures. The skin temperature will increase to about 104 degrees which has an additional effect where the pulse also increases by around 30% this in turn enables the heart to pump to twice its normal rate. As a protective measure against the internal organs the body then sends the majority of the heated blood cells to the skin allowing it to dissipate. Whilst this is taking place the flow of blood is increased combined with the circulation sending oxygen rich blood and nutrients to the skins surface which then helps the overall appearance and functionality.

The sauna and steam room both have similar properties with the body and this is to help the body to sweat and perspire. It is estimated that on average, the body will sweat around a pint of fluid within a matter of only minutes of entering the sauna or steam room.

Although common perception believes that sweating will remove toxins within the body, it is not true. Our liver and kidney are purpose built for this procedure. Although sweating is able to eliminate dirt and grime within our pores, this is through the perspiration pushy its way through the skin bringing with it any excess dirt and grime.

There are many other benefits to our bodies through the use of the sauna and steam room. Pain can be relieved through loosing tense muscles and on the other hand after a tense workout can alleviate muscle cramp; relief can be aided to people who suffer rheumatic pains alongside much, much more.

Relax Your Worries Away With High Quality Steam Rooms

Steam rooms are a great way to relax at the end of a hard day, or anytime you need a chance to relive some stress. Unlike, a sauna, which uses dry heat, steam rooms can be up to 100% humidity. The heat and humidity has many benefits:

  • Improved circulation
  • Quickens metabolism
  • Helps alleviate headaches and sore joints
  • Opens up the respiratory system

Hot Stuff

Both saunas and steam rooms work on the principle of raising the body temperature, producing sweat, which can promote dilation of blood vessels, lowering blood pressure and pulse rate. Toxins are released from the body and kidney and liver functions operate more efficiently.

Sit Back and Relax

Perhaps most important, the steam helps the body relax. It soothes the muscles and opens the pores. Steam rooms provide a quiet, peaceful break from the stress of a bustling day full of obligations and responsibilities. There is no better way to let go of the cares of the day-just steam them right out of your system.

Wide Variety

Steam rooms come in a wide variety of styles and sizes, allowing homeowners to find the perfect unit. Many homeowners go full bore and build a custom unit. Others choose to install a ready-made system. Still others purchase a portable unit.

Built-in units offer many advantages, not the least is a significant price difference from a custom unit. Determine your budget, available space and the optimum size you desire. Will there be many people using the unit or just one or two? Would you prefer a straight steam room or would you enjoy a combination unit that also has a steam shower or maybe a whirlpool as well?

Also, determine which of the popular add-on features appeal to you. Popular features include water massage jets, complete sound systems, footrests, and even flat screen TV's.

Take Precaution

No matter what model you choose, always use caution. Pregnant women, heart patients, people with respiratory problems or high blood pressure should avoid the heat. This removes any chance of over-heating.

Clear Skin

With some planning and an eye on safety, you can find the perfect unit for your home. A steam is the perfect antidote to a busy lifestyle. The steam and heat will relax your body, help clear up skin problems, and move toxins out of your system. With a wide variety of steam rooms available, it should be no sweat finding the right one for you.

Spa Day: Treat Yourself To Microdermabrasion At Home

Most people suffer from some type of skin problem during their lives. The most common epidermal condition or disorder is acne. About eighty percent of Americans experience outbreaks during their teenage years. Eczema, dermatitis, skin cancer, and psoriasis are all less common, but more serious diseases. What is causing them?

There are many suspects. But at the end of the day, it often comes down to anatomy and environment. Skin is our integument. It is our protective barrier against the elements. As result, it takes a beating on a daily basis. Most skin problems are reliably minor and can be treated with non-prescription medications. However, if over-the-counter products are ineffective, it may be necessary to see a dermatologist.

Dermatologists are medical specialists, which means that most of their patients have chronic skin conditions. In recent years, however, these doctors have turned their attention to repairs. Millions of Americans have scars from their teenage battles with acne. It is now possible to remove or at least lighten these scars with a dermatological procedure called microdermabrasion.

What is it?

It may sound complicated, but microdermabrasion is really nothing more than an aggressive and intensive skin-exfoliating procedure. The treatment is almost painless and is completely noninvasive, since only a small layer of the skin is actually removed. There is rarely any need for an anesthetic and recovery time is short. Most patients walk in and walk out in less than an hour.

The treatment works best when the scars are wonderful, ie, when they only affect the epidermis. According to its practitioners, microdermabrasion can quickly and painlessly remove minor acne scars, sun damage, age spots, fines lines and some winkles. It is generally used on the face, although it has proved effective on other areas of the body.

Is it worth it?

Microdermabrasion is a temporary solution. After the top few layers of skin (the stratum corneum) have been removed, the skin will generally look much smoother and healthier. But the results do not last long. These top few layers of skin will grow back in about a month, which means that repeated visits are needed to maintain that satiny smoothness. Most patients have at least one treatment each month. They are also instructed to stay out of the sun and to use skincare creams and sunscreen every day.

Patients who have mild acne scars or dull, discolored or sallow skin can benefit greatly from microdermabrasion. The procedure is far less successful when dealing with age spots, fine lines and wrinkles. It is not, after all, a fountain of youth. Removing the top layers of skin also will not efface deep acne scars and pockmarks. With that said, the treatment is still one of the most popular dermalogical procedures going.

Cost

Most dermatologists charge about $ 100 for each microdermabrasion session. This is a reasonably reasonable fee, but it can add up, since multiple visits are necessary. Not to mention the fact that treatments are not covered by insurance. Microdermabrasion is considered a cosmetic procedure and all patients who receive it must pay out-of-pocket. On average, a year of treatments can cost well over a thousand dollars! That is why many people are turning to home kits.

What are they?

The first thing people want to know about home kits is if they are safe. Because it is a minor medical procedure, microdermabrasion can be completed at home, just like tooth whitening or most acne treatments. These simple kits contain most of the same chemicals and some of the same equipment that are used by dermatologists. But just like home tooth whitening systems, the chemicals and solutions are typically a bit weaker than those that are used by doctors. However, they are still effective.

The average microdermabrasion kit contains an abrasive cream or scrub and a tool that is designed for application and removal. The active ingredient in most solutions is aluminum oxide crystals, which is what licensed dermatologists use. According to our research, the only real difference between office and home treatments is how the chemicals are removed. Doctors have a powerful vacuum that was specifically designed to remove all the dead skin cells, while the kits contain a simple manual tool-a scrub cloth.

With that said, it is the opinion of most experts that it is possible to get a thorough microdermabrasion treatment at home. The most important advice we can give you if you are considering a home kit is to take your time. Dermatologists spend about a half an hour with each patient, which makes all the difference. If you rush through the microdermabrasion at home procedure and cut corners, you will not get the results you expect.

Microdermabrasion treatments can be safely and affordably completed at home with the help of a kit.

3 New Spa Treatments for 2012

Treating yourself to a relaxing spa session is an excellent way of unwinding from the stresses of daily life. You may think that you are familiar with every spa treatment under the sun but, looking forward to the New Year, we have discovered some innovative new methods that are being offered by spas around the world.

1) There is an increasing trend of some experimental spas beginning to offer multi-sensory treatment. One center in Pennsylvania has started advertising something known as a Tibetan sound massage. Using Tibetan singing bowls, this intriguing new treatment is designed to 'balance the body' through vibrations from the traditional instrument. Another US resort puts an even greater emphasis on sound, combining the therapeutic effects of music, rhythm and the sounds of nature to assist relaxation. Perhaps even more intriguing is the resurgence in popularity of some ancient Ayurvedic treatments, which uses color therapy to correct chakra imbalances. With other traditional massage and sauna techniques now mixing light and sound together to create a very different kind of health experience, multi-sensory therapy certainly seems to be the new craze in spa treatment for 2012.

2) According to a new breed of 'coaching' practitioners, effective spa-like healing is even available on your computer screen. If you have been to a far-flung destination on holiday and visited a spa, it is now sometimes possible to continue your treatment at home. With coaches offering advice on everything from sleeping patterns to eyebrow grooming, you could choose to abandon traditional spas in favor of e-mail. Although these techniques could be an effective method of sticking to health routines you became familiar with whilst away, it is important to keep in mind that taking this option will mean you do the work – at a spa, it is all done for you!

3) If a 'starfish sparkle manicure' or 'ice-cream pedicure' does not sound quite like your sort of thing, that may be because they are two examples of new spa treatments that have been specifically designed for children. Spa sessions for under 18s are becoming increasingly common, with some resorts offering full days dedicated to their younger customers. There is a spa in Hawaii which also offers parents the chance to sign up for baby massage classes. This new brand of treatments does not yet seem to have a tattoo on in Britain, but may be an interesting activity for your family to try if you are on a holiday in the US!

How To Buy A Pedicure Chair For Personal Use

A pedicure is a technique that is used to cleanse toenails and feet, so that one gets rid of dead skin cells and flakes. As the procedure is carried out, one sets on a special chair, referred to as pedicure chair. If one prefers, this procedure may be accompanied with a foot massage to rejuvenate the skin and relax muscles on the feet.

Most people nowdays prefer home pedicures as opposed to visiting a professional spa. This can be attributed to the convenience, satisfaction and affordability of a home pedicure. As a result, many people now buy pedicure chairs which they use as they are cleansing their feet.

The equipment is readily available in most pharmacies and departmental stores. Generally, most people prefer recognized brands, mainly because of their outstanding reputation in honoring any guarantees. Smaller brands are, however, cheaper and if one makes the right choice, they can be just as effective as those from bigger brands.

You can also save money by buying a used chair. There is a wide choice of quality refurbished equipment that can be just as effective as a new chair. Shopping from reputable dealers will ensure that you get a quality seat at a low price.

Shopping online will also help you see the various choices available, as well as their prices. One can also find a wide range of choices online. This may be quite difficult and tiresome if one opts for conventional window shopping. By shopping from recognized sites, you can get the right equipment that will be delivered right to your doorstep once you make the purchase.

Quality widely depends on the manufacturer. Trusted and established brands will usually have many satisfied customers. Cost may not always be an ultimate statement of quality. However, you should avoid phony brands which equipment may malfunction after a few uses.

The equipment comes in varying designs and styles. Most chairs are designed to offer comfort and functionality. However, others incorporate extra features, such as adjustable foot and arm rests. When buying a chair, it is essential to weigh the features against your personal needs. There are also other chairs that have whirlpools to provide extra rejuvenation, albeit at a higher cost. Some also have minute storage cabinets to stow away tools once you are done for the day.

The size of your house is another important consideration when it comes to this equipment. If you are going to use the chair in a small room, then you might consider smaller chairs which come without sinks. However, if you have extra space, then you can purchase those that have sinks attached to them. These require to be installed near drain and water supply systems. They also increase overall cost due to plumbing involved in installation.

It may be challenging to find the right equipment. With the right selection criteria and budget however, you can discover something that will suit your needs perfectly. If you lack the financial capability to buy top of the range models, first buy the basic equipment and gradually save up for the pedicure chair of your choice.

How to Choose an Electrolysis Provider Who You Can Be Safe and Comfortable With

An electrolysis provider can permanently remove undesirable hair growth on a woman's upper lip, bikini line or chin, as well as on her legs and arms. Let's talk about how to find the right electrolysis provider for you.

1. Personal References. When most people want to find a hairdresser, nail salon, or dentist, the first thing they do is ask their circle of friends. It can be a little more delicate when you're looking for an electrologist or hair removal clinic, but discreetly asking attractive friends where to go is a great way to start.

You can take this a step further. Once you find an electrolysis provider you're interested in visiting, see if you can find anyone who has used their services before and ask them about their experience.

2. Consultation. Once you've found a hair removal clinic, set up a consultation. Serious note: make sure that your initial consult is with the electrologist who will be performing the procedure. Talking to the receptionist alone is not good enough. She would be able to answer some of your basic questions but for more of the advanced / medical questions you'll need a qualified expert.

Here are some of the questions you should think about asking:

1. What type of treatment (“modality”) do you use?

2. How many sessions will be required?

3. What type of costs will I be looking for for these treatments?

Those questions give you an idea of things you can ask during a consultation. You should also pay attention to the surroundings – is the building clean and is the treatment room private? Do the employees answer your questions in a way that makes you feel confident? Also, do you feel comfortable with the actual electrolysis provider? You will be spending time with them and they will be touching your skim – you need to like them!

3. Visit more than one clinic. If you can, visit at least three. This will give you a good feel for different clinics and their electrologists. You can make a better decision if you have more than one experience / consultation to base your decision on. Choose the one that you felt the most comfortable with.

4. Patch test. Ask to have a patch test done. Have an area that is out of sight treated. This way if you were going to have any sort of reaction to a treatment it would only be a small portion of your body. (Please note: you will be required to pay for a patch test. You can expect to pay roughly $ 40.00).

Well my fellow spa enthusiasts I'm here to tell you eyelash extensions are the new hair extensions when it comes to finding new clients services for aestheticians, salons and spas.

Semi-permanent eyelash extensions are one of the fastest growing salon services in the world. This popular beauty enhancement service has taken the United States, Canada and Europe by storm in a reliably short amount of time. Various celebrities', actors, models, and musicians have been photographed at fashion shows, runways, and other high-profile red carpet events with beautiful long eyelashes. Semi-permanent eyelash extensions are the new Botox. Women and men are flocking to salons and spas looking for new ways to strengthen and redefine their eyes to rediscover their inner and out beauty and enhance their overall self-confidence.

The key to maximizing your revenue generating potential with eye lash extensions, is analyzing important factors such as core foundational training and creating and implementing a sales focused client assessment and evaluation. Salon professionals generally struggle with charging the appropriate prices for their services, out of fear of being under-sold by their competitors. Understanding and mastering these two things will set you on the path to increased profits.

The first step to collecting more money with eyelash extensions is initial core foundational training. Most reputable eyelash manufacturers provide two-day courses, as one day courses typically can not cover all the fundamental information that will allow you to charge premium prices and educate professionals to work safely on clients. Simply stated do not skimp when you are looking to learn how to apply lashes, and purchase solely on the price of the training. All trainings and instructors are not created equal. Learning eyelash application takes time and patience and most importantly trainers who understand how to communicate clearly and professionally. Why? If you have a question while receiving you're training or your prospective clients have question about the application process or products who do you think is going to give you the answers you need to satisfy your concerns and those of your clients. Over crowded classes will hinder you overall learning experience. A couple of my personal preferences are SPA LASH Couture Collection training, or Xtreme Lash due to the smaller class sizes and consistent availability of the training. I would also recommend you look for companies that provide a 5 to 1 student to teacher ratio as well. Twelve students to one trainer when it comes to learning semi permanent eye lashes is not a good thing.

The second factor to collecting the true value of your eyelash extension services is implementing a sales focused client assessment and evaluation process. This should be the industry standard but it's not. Most salons offer just a service and a price and if you do not differiate your process from other salons you are actually selling yourself short. Most clients want great service, professionalism, and products. Not just a cheap product or service. How many times has a client ever said to you, “I do not care how dirty or unprofessional your salon or spa is, go ahead treat me like crap, I'm just here for the price.” I'm willing to bet that rarely happens if ever. So build in a time for client evaluations to determine the client's needs and define realistic expectations and pricing based on the number of lashes you will be applying and the level of service you will provide. Charging a flat rate for lashes often leads to under-charging for the service.

If you take the time and expense to learn more about what you do and the services you provide, usually you will make more money as your clients will be happy with the results. Remember to share what you learn with your clients, because If you master the techniques your clients will enjoy the results and referrals will come. A positive mental attitude, and great listening skills often lead to great referrals and great referrals, often lead to good clients. If you keep these things in mind you will make more money.

What’s So Great About Glycerin and Homemade Soap?

Soap is made when you mix oils and fats with lye. Oils and fats for soap are compounds of glycerin and natural fatty acids. In general, “fatty acids” refer to any compound derived from the breakdown of fats. When oils are mixed with an alkali, they form glycerin and the sodium salts of the fatty acids. Glycerin is a skin-friendly humectant which attracts water to the skin. Large soap manufacturers remove the glycerin and sell it separately, sort of like when coffee companies use the caffeine left over from their “decaf” coffee and sell them to cola or headache medicine companies. Glycerin is a substance that attracts moisture from the air, helping to keep skin soft and supple.

In an article by R. Morgan Griffin titled, “What's Causing Your Dry Skin,” we discover that, for many, dry skin is not a sign of a skin condition or disease. It can simply be caused by harsh soaps, itchy clothing, misusing moisturizer, and long, hot showers. The article goes on to state that we go for harsh soaps, such as deodorant or antibacterial soaps, that generate lots of lather and leave us feeling squeaky clean. Vesna Petronic-Rosic, MD, says that the lather from the soap removes the oils from the surface of the skin and dries it out. Dr. Petronic-Rosic is an assistant professor of medicine and director of the Dermatology Outpatient Clinic at the University of Chicago Medical School. For some of us, treating our skin properly may involve having to relearn simple tasks that we do every single day, like washing our hands at the sink or enjoying a hot shower in the evening. Frequent hand washing is, indeed, essential to keep ourselves, our friends, and our families healthy. However, if your hand washing is causing dry, cracked skin and open sores, you're quite literally opening yourself up to disease. Switching to a soap that's rich in glycerin and using warm, but not very hot water, can help heal dry, cracked hands. Also, using a moisturizer when your skin is still warm and damp from the sink or shower can help your skin hang on to those essential oils and, over time, heal your dry skin.

You can actually purchase liquid glycerin from your local health food store. In small amounts, glycerin can be applied directly to the skin. It can be applied directly to the lips morning and night, alone or mixed with a touch of honey or milk cream. Lipsticks containing glycerin are more hydrating and can be longer-lasting than other lipsticks, as the skin cells on the lips stay plump and healthy, longer. Glycerin is sweet-tasting, and is sometimes used as a dietary supplement or sugar substitute.

A rather unrelated, yet interesting note on glycerin: I've often used it as “sweat” on skin and clothing in television and film!
